As former Associate Professor of Hispanic Studies at Converse College in Spartanburg, South Carolina, I taught classes in French language, Spanish (focusing on Latin America) as well as Latinx Studies. Before coming to Converse, I was a Mellon Postdoctoral Fellow at Ohio Wesleyan University where I worked on my book Capturing Mariposas. My Spanish career started at Dalhousie University in Halifax, continued with a Master’s at the University of Western Ontario, and was capped with a Ph.D. from The Ohio State University. I’ve also lived in Mexico, and did a stint in journalism at Concordia University in Montreal, Quebec. I recently stepped back from academic life, taking a position at Columbus School for Girls in Ohio, to be closer to friends and family.
Although I created this website to showcase my academic life, I also include interests outside of the ivory tower. I’ve held a myriad of jobs, including farm work (picking apples, strawberries, blueberries, beans), produce clerk, paper boy, credit analyst, and customer service at far too many call centers. I have built furniture, knit myself hats, completed remodeled my 90-year-old house and rewired the electrical wires in my attic. I am eager to learn and try just about anything. I maintain the same attitude in my academic life and strive to instill the same in my students. Contact: profesordoug@gmail.com
