On the evaluation section where students rate the overall quality of my classes, I have averaged a strong 4.6/5 since coming to Converse. Moreover, this number has increased incrementally, from 4.4 2017/2018, to 4.54 to 4.72 and 4.74 in 2020/2021.
Nevertheless, we know that numbers do not tell the entire story. Below are a selection of student comments:
• I really enjoyed Dr. Bush’s teaching style. Each class we learned some new Spanish, but I never felt overwhelmed with information. He also was able to keep my attention throughout each of his lectures. I really enjoyed having his class. (Spanish 101, Fall 2017)
• [He made it] fun and interesting even at nine in the morning. I really like Dr. Bush’s teaching style. I have always found Spanish to be a challenging subject, but he is able to explain in a way that makes sense. I felt like I learned a lot in his class, especially in comparison to Spanish classes I took outside of Converse. I really enjoyed his class, and I’m excited for next semester. (Spanish 101, Spring 2017)
• [He] gave plenty of time to discuss the material in class. We read really interesting material and I like that we get to engage with the material by having class discussion rather than lecture (Mexican Modernity, Spring 2018)
• The material for class and the discussion-based classes made this course a true success. The texts and media we used for the course were not only very pertinent to the class and helped guide our learning, but were also obviously thoughtfully curated as well as entertaining. The discussion-based class is the optimal form for this class to be taught. The understanding gained through deep questioning and bouncing ideas off of peers really challenged and engaged me. (Latino Studies, Fall 2017)
• Being able to reflect on social issues, personal experiences, and talk these things out in class was incredibly valuable to me. I thoroughly enjoyed every aspect of this course. (Latino Studies, Fall 2017)
• It was very apparent that Dr. Bush put a lot of thought into his lesson plans. There never seemed to be a lull during class time, we were constantly learning something new, conversing in Spanish with our peers, or doing a fun learning exercise. Dr. Bush also succeeded in making the course not just another Spanish class, but one that discussed relevant topics happening Spanish speaking countries as well as making the material intriguing for college students. (Spanish 101, Fall 2018)
• Great teaching tactics. Dr. Bush was very energetic and always kept the class going. He has been my favorite spanish teacher, as well as most beneficial at teaching myself Spanish (Spanish 101, Spring 2019)
• I thoroughly enjoyed the culture lessons each class and how he used the topic of the day to also teach grammar. I also really enjoyed the interactive activities which made the course interesting and enjoyable. (Spanish 201, Fall 2018)
• One of the best things Dr. Bush did was including a variety of teaching methods in the class. Some days he would teach from a powerpoint, but he would mix fun activities and study days between those classes where we wouldn’t feel burnt out and want to skip class. While some of the lessons could have been extremely boring, he would give us a listening activity that was maybe a music video that would go along with the lesson as well. That is extremely important, yet fun and everyone seemed to enjoy it in class as well. (Spanish 201, Spring 2018)
• He taught me a love for theater I did not know. Also, I acted in front of people- it was crazy but a beautiful experience. (Latin American Theatre, Spring 2019)
• I’m going to miss professor Bush for Spanish 201 *sad face* *sad face* I’ve enjoyed having him for both of my Spanish classes. (Spanish 201, Fall 2019)
• I already knew most of the grammatical rules going into this class, but I still learned interesting things that none of my previous Spanish teachers have reviewed. (Spanish 102, Fall 2019)
• I have really loved being in Dr. Bush’s class and [I] am disappointed that I am graduating and won’t be able to take any more classes with him! He is really engaging, which can be difficult in a classroom full of people who might be initially nervous to speak Spanish, and very patient and kind. He is also clearly knowledgeable about Spanish language and culture. When we struggled with readings, he always empathized with us and encouraged us to be open about what we were having a hard time understanding, then took the time to dedicate more class time to understanding the reading better. I had such a great experience with this class and feel that my Spanish has noticeably improved. (Peninsular Spanish Literature, Spring 2020)
• We had awesome discussions, and I enjoyed the presentations before class because it gave you an idea as to what to expect during the movie or what themes to look for. I didn’t always like the movies, but I enjoyed learning more about the topics or social issues they were addressing regardless. La mujer sin cabeza was the only exception. I really didn’t like that one. Anyways, Dr. Bush is an awesome professor. He really knows how to lead a discussion. Plus, he really encourages students who have a strong interest in learning languages to hone their skills. (Latin American Film, Spring 2020)
• I loved the discussions the week after about a movie. His selection of films is superb. The projects he had us do throughout the semester were amazing (Latin American Film, Spring 2020)
• He is very understanding of the fact that we are not going to be perfect and gives us time to correct and understand our mistakes. Dr. Bush is excellent in explaining things that I didn’t know. He is very helpful when I come to him about questions and I appreciate that. I enjoy the activities that he included in class and the workbooks are always great practice for the chapters. (Spanish 102, Spring 2021)
• I liked that you actually had to talk so you got that additional practice. I felt that it made me less nervous to speak Spanish because it showed that I was trying and that I knew what I was doing to a degree. (Spanish 102, Spring 2021)
• I have taken all 3 language classes with Dr. Bush and I have learned so much about the Spanish language and culture. Dr. Bush has made the material interesting and puts a lot into his course work. Throughout this class specifically, we studied many stories, videos, and songs. I feel like this helped me understand a lot more about the Spanish culture. 11/10 (Spanish 201, Spring 2021)
• Dr. Bush is one of the best professors at Converse. He is willing to help students and teaches the material very effectively (Spanish 201, Spring 2021)
• I love the way the course is taught. It is interaction based, thought provoking and it helps me learn (Conversation and Composition, Fall 2020)
• It is just a very interesting topic and I appreciated Dr. Bush’s passion for recording. I love how we were given the opportunity to learn about Spanish news and the way that they relay those stories. It gave me some an amazing insight and helped my speaking skills (or at least that was how I felt) (Radio Converse, Spring 2021)
Comments on the online shift/ongoing pandemic response
• How quickly/effectively the professor adapted the structure of the course and evaluations to an online format. He was good about explaining things and made class fun everyday! (Spanish 101, Spring 2020)
• The online videos helped to understand new information. Dr. Bush did a great job of transitioning online and I really appreciated him making lecture videos for us to watch. It helped me to feel like I was still in class by following along with him. (Spanish 102, Spring 2020)
• The videos were informative and easy to follow. Listen. It’s a language course. It’s not going to transition well online. But! for a language course, it transitioned really well to online! The professor provided a butt-load of resources, which was excellent, and I liked the time taken to do some practice questions in the lecture even though we weren’t all there to actually respond. (Spanish 102, Spring 2020)
• This hybrid class has been the best by far, you can tell a lot of work went into planning. The tests were structured nicely and I appreciate the work that went into them. The videos were very helpful for me and I was able to rewatch them if I did not understand something. I appreciated that Dr. Bush listed PowerPoints for each lesson. This helped me with note taking during class. Dr. Bush had a variety of resources available to students for studying. I felt like he set the class up in a way to meet the learning styles of every student. (Spanish 101, Fall 2020)
And because not everybody will love you…
• Because he spoke almost totally in Spanish, there were some disadvantages like not fully understanding what was going on in class. I did not feel welcomed and this was the first time that I ever actually dreaded going to Spanish class. (Latin American Theatre, Spring 2019)
• I felt like a lot of the material contained a lot of slang and colloquialism indigenous to Spain. While I understand that the course was designed to teach the students about Spanish modernity, I have a hard time understanding slang in English half of the time. (Mexican Modernity, Spring 2018 – note, this class was about Mexico, not Spain)
• Don’t throw us into Spanish. Speak some English, in the beginning, to help us out. (Spanish 101, Fall 2017)
